CHANDIGARH-June 22, 2009:Dr. M.R. Tewari, former Professor and Head, Dept. of English, Kurukshetra University passed away at Melbourne, Australia. His daughter, Dr. Uma Tewari informed that part of his Ashes have been immersed in Indian Ocean at one of his favourite places, Sorrento. There will be a Shanti Path on Saturday, 27th June 2009.
A prolific writer, Dr.. M.R. Tewari had endeared himself as one of the most erudite, compassionate, loving and nurturing teacher. His warmth concern, commitment and affection was something unique which is rarely seen these days.
Dr. Tewari had also taught at Panjab University, Chandigarh and the Postgraduate Centre at Jalandhar. Born on 6th October 1929, Dr. Tewari after retirement from Kurukshetra University went to Australia in 1990 and as a Visiting Professor organized workshops, delivered lectures at various universities including Monash University, Melbourne and at the Kipling Society.
A sensitive poet and a creative writer, Dr. Tewari had authored Literary Criticism books - One Interior Life, Literary Essays, William Wordsworth, John Keats and the Self, Joseph Conrad's Nostromo, James Joyce, Rudyard Kipling and India. He also authored books on Religious and Philosophy – Mool Sutra, Japji Sahib in English, I Am but I am not, Maharishi Raman, Nisargadatta Maharaj and M.R., The Way of Becoming.
The news of his death came as a shock to the entire Tewari family including Justice Ajay Tewari, Mr. Manish Tewari, Member Parliament, Mr. Kamal Tewari, Chairman, Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Academy, Mrs. Vijay Lakshmi Sharma, former Principal Govt. College for Girls and a large number of his students and friends who felt that a void had been created by his absence.

I didn't know Dr.M.R. Tewari personally!Actually,he is my Aunt,Dr. Uma Tewari's father!My father met Dr.Uma Tewari in Ambala,at some college,where she,along with her father,came and they both delivered a splendid lecture on Henry James.My father told me that the lecture given by them was spellbounding!This lecture resulted in Dr.Uma Tewari and my father's friendship!Dr.M.R.Tewari was a Ph.D on William Wordsworth!His daughter has also earned a doctorate in English literature!She has done Ph.D on Thomas Stearns Eliot,abbreviated as T.S.Eliot!!Dr.M.R.Tewari had a specialisation in poetry,otherwise,he was a voracious follower of whole,English language and English literature!!He was a man who had in-depth knowledge of everything!!I have got to know so much about him from my father and on the site of Monash University,that it seems to me that I personally know him!I adore and idolise Dr.M.R.Tewari and his daughter in my English literature studies!Dr.Uma Tewari(my aunt)helps me a lot and gives me tips,how,I should master,first,the English language and then English literature!I could only say,"Both are great!"Ocean of knowledge of English literaure!!
ReplyDeleteI have not seen,neither,Dr.M.R.Tewari nor his daughter,Dr.Uma Tewari!!Since,Dr.M.R.Tewari passed away long time ago,so,I cannot see him face to face,but,I have a burning desire to see his him in his snap!!I also want to see my Aunt,Dr.Uma Tewari's photograph!!Unfathomable curiosity arouses in me to see these great people!!I hope, I will soon get this pleasure!

ReplyDeleteI have seen,neither,Dr.M.R.Tewari nor his daughter,Dr.Uma Tewari!!The former has passed away,a long time back,so,it is not possible that I can see him personally!I cannot see Mrs.Uma Tewari(my Aunt)as she lives at the other end of the world!She lives in Australia.But,I have a burning desire to see these great people!Unfathomable curiousity arises in me and this is because,I'm also going down the road of English literature,as did my Aunt and her late father!!I hope,I will accomplish my desire or more than a desire,a'dream',soon!!
ReplyDeleteI tried hard to,somehow,get Dr.M.R.Tewari and his daughter's snap on internet by entering'Monash University Staff!I had a hope that I will surely be successful in that but could not be!Please,if anyone finds their photo anywhere,do put it on the site of the university!
